Barceloneta-Gothic areas
(historical centre)

Barceloneta area:
Up to the middle of the 19th Century area of Barceloneta was a neighbourhood in which the activities of its inhabitants were related to the sea: fishing. During the 20th Century, the industrial and fishing Barceloneta became the main resort of the city. Every summer, as a result of its privileged situation, it was filled with Barcelonian bathers who went there to enjoy the sea and the good fish. This transformation has lasted until our days, and the old fishing activity of the neighbourhood has brought the makings of a place in which the best Mediterranean food can be tasted. Barcelona is a city open to the sea, therefore Barceloneta and the Gothic Quarter are located almost in the city centre -see maps- and they have good connexions with public transportation. There is a wonderful harbour, and fish restaurants offer the same products as the Gothic Quarter.
Gothic area:
The Gothic Area is the most ancient nucleus of Barcelona and its historical centre. This is where buildings and streets with historical relevance can be found. It is formed by different quarters that preserve its personality: El Call, Sant Just i Pastor, Santa Maria del Pi, La Catedral, Santa Anna, La Mercè and el Palau. It is the most important trade area of Catalonia.
